I just purchased two Whirlpool Natural Gas Water Heaters manufactered by American Water Company. During installation a secondary ring filter must be installed around the base as the pilot may go out when the primary air filter becomes clogged. This secondary filter seems to address an overall design flaw as many other water heaters do not require such a filter. Additionally this ring filter requires periodic cleaning to prevent flame outs. In retrospect I would rather have a water heater that is maintenance free.

Well after extensive research it appears that many brands of water heaters have a problem with the pilot going out mainly due to a clogged lint and dust filter. There are very few gas water heaters that are now truly maintenance free. This problem was introduced in 2003 or so when all gas models required the addition of a flame arrestor. This arrestor is designed to close and smother any flame in the lower chamber preventing flamable vapors from igniting and traveling to the source like a gas can, etc.

I don’t think you have done your homework. Search Whirlpool gas water heater reviews and you will come up with more reviews like mine: I bought a 6 year warrantied Whirlpool hot water heater Model N50T61-403, product number 0733318, at Lowe’s Home Improvement Center and for three years the pilot light fails to stay lit. I have talked with Whirlpool 1-877-817-6750, the number on the unit, many times. I went through the troubleshooting checklist and verified all requirements. I paid a plumber $150 to check it out and he said I needed a larger supply line and venting the closet door would help. I did this and pilot still goes out often. Whirlpool sent me a new gas valve and it cost me another $150 to have it installed. The plumber said everything is good. But the pilot is still going out. Called Whirlpool again and talked with them for 24 minutes. The woman on the line was telling me I needed a certain amount of oxygen for this 40,000 BTU model. She was giving me minimum requirements for square or cubic feet of house with 8 inch ceilings. Yes, she said 8 inch ceilings 4 or 5 times as we went over the requirements. I got so frustrated asking her what she was talking about and she hung up on me. I called back and asked for a supervisor and a different woman had me hold on, came back and said a supervisor would call me. I did get a call back and the supervisor wanted to send me another gas valve and a burner assembly. I told him the burner assembly is working fine and I have a new gas valve. I asked him to send me a $150 along with it to pay the plumber. He said they only warranty the parts. So, am I supposed to have $450 in labor plus my time in this product on top of the original cost? I said no thank you and asked him if he would accept this as a solution if he were the customer and he said this is not a personal discussion. I know his answer.
I am never buying a Whirlpool product again. But now I need to buy a new, good brand, water heater to replace the Whirlpool piece of junk. Bad product, bad company, bad warranty. I got screwed by Whirlpool once but never again.

Please add to my post: The flame arrestor is clean.
